Random images from the Garden today: Putting your head to the ground and looking up at kale gives you a different perspective Three nights of hard frost in April destroyed every single fruit blossom on our 18 trees.... except this one Getting up close with plants can help you see notice things. Thank you for your support of Hope Community Garden & Porch Pantry, where our mission is to reduce food insecurity, promote skill development, and build social connections.

A labyrinth ... we did it!
Happy dance when we were close to finishing. This is how it started -- painted lines in the grass. Then we began digging ... ...and kept digging ... ...and dug some more. We brought in supplies .... ....then poured sand and laid bricks in the trenches we had dug. Other tasks also got done, including staining the gazebo .... ...and sealing the picnic benches and tables. Also, a huge load of weeds was pulled from the pollinator garden, and new plants were added there. We forgot

Flowers bring pollinators -- look at these beauties
The recent rains have made our pollinator garden look so good! You might not see that when you're passing by. Next time, please feel free to park your bike / car / scooter, and walk toward our East fence to see the flowers in all their glory. We are thankful for the Pollinator Garden grant of plants and seeds we received in 2022 from the Utah Department of Agriculture and Food that got this garden started. Since then, various community donors have brought us flowering plants

Seedlings Everywhere
Today is #UtahGives....and Cache Valley gives even better! Several of our supporters are growing seedlings at home to give away to our gardeners. Truly,"remote work" at its finest. Some growers are using newspaper pots made by volunteers, which we wrote about earlier: A tray of zucchini at Julie's house Butternut squash at Karin's house. One grower has to resort to ingenious methods to keep their cats out of the seedlings: A folding table serves as support for the growlights

Seeds and seedlings -- hurray!
Our greenhouse team -- all volunteers -- has been tending seeds and seedlings since early March. Looks at these splendid little zucchini plants! Our hope is to have multiple plants for each gardener on kick-off day on May 9. Let us know if you would like to get in on the fun and start some seeds for our gardeners in your own indoor space. We can get you set up with seeds, potting soil, and starter trays. We are grateful for a Healthy Communities grant from the Bear River Heal

Signs of spring
Some of our gardeners have started planting cool-season vegetables. While the beds look mostly bare, important work is happening in the soil. Meanwhile, our peach trees are really showing off. The other fruit trees won't be far behind.

Cache Valley's rare and native plants
For all you folks who love (learning about) plants ... Did you know that the Logan area has three rare species of Utah native plants? Maguire's primrose, Cronquist's daisy, and Frank Smith violet. Have you spotted any of these in the wild? We enjoy promoting this event that our friends at Stokes Nature Center and the Intermountain Herbarium are co-organizing: Because this event is held at Home Range Brewing, attendees must be 21 or older. The event is free but tickets are li

Promoting the Garden
Many thanks to the volunteers who promoted Hope Community Garden at the Seed Swap & Plant Exchange held at the Logan Library this afternoon. It's always great to connect with fellow plant lovers. Some visitors learned about Hope Community Garden for the first time, and our volunteers were ready to answer all questions. Good work; thank you!
